Newfoundland, Quebec Innu clash over caribou

Newfoundland and Labrador's government said Monday a group of Quebec Innu is threatening to wipe out an endangered caribou herd by hunting in a protected area and called for a meeting to settle the dispute.
Some 150 Innu from Quebec began hunting over the weekend in Labrador to protest a deal between the province and the Innu in Labrador paving way for the Lower Churchill hydro project.
The hunt was set to last a week but the Quebec Innu said at the end of Monday it was almost over since they were close to reaching a quota of 150 animals.
The Newfoundland government lashed out at the Quebec Innu for hunting in an area where protected red wine caribou mix with a healthier George River herd.
The Quebec Innu dispute the claim they pose a risk to a threatened herd and stress it is their right to keep hunting where they always have.
"Our ancestors were hunting caribou and we'll keep doing so. The animals we are taking home will feed several families for weeks," said Chief Georges Bacon, of the Innu community of Unamen Shipu.
