Spiked meat stuns pet owners

TORONTO - Dog owners in the Bathurst St.-Eglinton Ave. W. area are shocked following the discovery of a beef tongue pierced with long spikes in a frequently used ravine.
Dorothy McKeown and a friend were walking their dogs Sunday morning in the Cedarvale Ravine when her friend's lab-sheppard mix Lola started chewing on what looked like a piece of meat.
They pulled the meat out of Lola's mouth and found a 46-cm beef tongue pierced with nine 30-cm spikes.

"It was obviously placed that morning because it wasn't frozen yet. It wasn't just a prank -- it's pretty sad someone would do something like this," McKeown said.
Cedarvale is one of Toronto's largest off-leash parks.
"It's scary and pretty shocking to have happened here. We're sad and sickened that someone would try to harm animals in this way," said McKeown, who reported the incident to police.
Alison Cross, spokesman for the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said pet owners need to be vigilant while walking their dogs.
"We're definitely concerned. It's always important to keep an eye on your animal and make sure what they're sniffing and drinking because you never know what's going to be out there," Cross said.
The spiked tongue was found the same day unidentified pills were discovered in an off-leash area in Allan Gardens. In another incident last week, white pills were found in the backyard of homes in the Sixth St.-Lakeshore Blvd. area.
In March 2009, two dogs died and several sickened after ingesting anti-freeze at a High Park dog area. That same month, a dog died after visiting a Whitby park.
