KUANTAN, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- Thirteen cows died after being struck by lightning at Kampung Sepat, here Tuesday night.

The owner of the herd, Mat Salleh Awang, 58, said the incident was believed to have occurred between 8 pm and midnight during heavy rain and a thunder storm.

He said that usually his herd of about 50 animals, including goats and buffaloes, would return to the shed in the evening but the 13 cows were not in the herd.

"I did not suspect any untoward incident until I was told by a friend at 8 this morning of the discovery of the carcasses of all the cows in a plantation about 1.5 kilometers from my house," he said when met here.

He said that upon arrival at the scene, he found burnt marks on several parts of the body of all the dead cows.

Mat Salleh said he later contacted the Veterinary Department which confirmed that the animals had died due to lightning strikes.
He said losses were estimated to be about RM7,000.
