Kampala kills stray dogs

28-11-2009 UG Pulse, Uganda

Kampala City Council has started killing all stray dogs and cats in the city centre. The Town Clerk of Kampala district, Ruth Kijjambu says the animals have been killed because the city residents have reported several times to KCC that dogs bite them, especially at night.

Kijjambu says the dogs hide in dark spots and attack pedestrians.

She also announces that Kampala City Council has started a mass vaccination exercise of dogs and cats in a move to curb rabies.

Kijjambu says the vaccination exercise is taking place in all the five divisions of Kampala: Kawempe, Lubaga, Makindye, Nakawa and Kampala Central Division.
She urges the residents of Kampala to take their animals for vaccination.

Kampala is expected to have over 20,000 dogs and around 25,000 cats.
