Buffalo, N.Y. - A 43-year-old Canadian man was sentenced to two years probation for smuggling 35 endangered Masasauga rattlesnakes and one spotted turtle into the United States for sale to an investigator posing as a collector.

Emanuele Tesoro of Waterdown, Ontario, pleaded guilty in July to smuggling protected wildlife into the United States from Canada. He had collected the animals from the wild and had arranged to sell them to an undercover investigator from the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation.

He was arrested after crossing the border with dozens of rattlesnakes hidden behind panels in his car.
