McCartney backs anti-hunt campaign

Sir Paul McCartney has backed efforts by animal welfare campaigners to keep the hunting ban, which could be repealed if the Tories win the next election.

In a report from Ifaw in Action, The former Beatle said: "When the cruel and unnecessary 'sport' of hunting with dogs was banned, I, along with the majority of the British public, backed this historic victory for wildlife.

"Don’t let politicians bring back cruelty. Help IFAW keep cruelty out of the countryside and back the ban on hunting with dogs."

- Sir Paul McCartney

"The scenes described in this report of how animals were hunted down and savaged with dogs for fun before the Hunting Act 2004 was passed are simply barbaric and shocking and should remain a part of Britain's past, not it's future."

The legislation, which came into force in England and Wales five years ago on Thursday, prohibits hunting of animals such as foxes and hares with dogs.

Conservative leader David Cameron has promised to allow a free vote on the repeal of the Hunting Act if the Tories win the next election.

And shadow environment secretary Nick Herbert has said there is a strong case for ditching the legislation, which he says caused divisions between town and country, did not protect wildlife and has resulted in only a handful of prosecutions.

But the report from Ifaw in Action claims there was "overwhelming scientific evidence" that hunting with dogs was cruel and that more than 100 people had been brought to justice for breaking the law.
