Tiger kills keeper at Shanghai Zoo

A ZOO keeper has been killed by a Bengal tiger at Shanghai Zoo after apparently forgetting to lock the animal's cage.

Li Zhonglin, 53, was attacked by the 10-year-old male tiger on Saturday as he cleaned outside its cage with the door unlocked, state news agency Xinhua reported, quoting local forestry officials.

A witness told newspaper, Xinmin Evening News, that the tiger pounced on Li and "gnawed" his neck.

Zoo workers and veterinarians "with narcotic equipment" were called immediately and had the tiger under control within 10 minutes, the newspaper reported.

The tiger has been put in isolation.

Medical personnel called to the scene confirmed the zoo keeper had been killed.

The State Forestry Administration said last month that there were nearly 6,000 captive tigers in China, most of them on "tiger farms" where the animals are bred for body parts used in traditional medicine.
