In Chinese stad Guangzhou 8300 varkens afgemaakt wegens mond- en klauwzeer uitbraak

8,300 pigs culled amid disease outbreak in China

GUANGZHOU, China -- Chinese officials say 8,382 pigs have been slaughtered because of a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the southern city of Guangzhou.

The official Xinhua News Agency on Tuesday quoted the local Veterinary Bureau as saying the outbreak occurred in Guangzhou's Baiyun district.

Such outbreaks are of great concern because pork is a vital part of the Chinese diet. Mass culling of livestock could push up prices.

Foot-and-mouth disease can be carried by wind and on the vehicles and clothes of people who come into contact with infected animals.
