Animal lovers across U.S., abroad demand justice

for dog dragged to death

More than a thousand animal lovers across the country and abroad have signed a petition on a social network website to make sure a Fruita man accused of dragging a dog to his death is punished.

"I started crying as soon as story came over my computer screen. It's so horrible, so unspeakable, so unbelievable; we reacted with our hearts," said Betsy Gunderson of Stuart, Fla.

Gunderson was joined by dozens of other animal lovers, and they created a Facebook page the day after the dog was found Wednesday at the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction.

A Facebook page called "Demand Justice for Buddy" was designed specifically for the German shepherd mix that had been stolen from Delta and dragged to death, allegedly by Steven Romero, 37.

Authorities said the dog had been forced to run 3 miles up steep hills before it was dragged when it couldn't keep up. The dog was found with a rope tied around its neck on a snowy road about 4:30 a.m. by a park employee.

Romero was arrested Thursday when he was in court on unrelated charges.

The 1,120 animal activists from across the country and as far away as Ireland hope their efforts will convince a Colorado court to charge Romero with a maximum penalty of three years in a federal prison, a $100,000 fine and one-year of probation.

"Our heart goes out to the dog," Gunderson said. "We want to make sure the person who did this serves every minute in jail that he can get."
