A sanctuary in St. Petersburg offers unwanted horses a chance to avoid the slaughterhouse and retire in dignity, while doing some good for others.

For many horses around the world whose owners cannot afford the upkeep of an animal or feel the horse has simply served its purpose, the cruel logic of a slaughterer’s rifle awaits.

A farm on the outskirts of St. Petersburg strives to save some of these animals from such an unfitting end.

“We had to create this rehab center because the horses that we saved were in a very bad condition,” an advisor to the director of the sanctuary, Tatyana Fedorova, told RT. “Of course, our center has no commercial value, but not everything is measured with money. We have groups of children come here to spend time with the horses. The value of a sick child spending time with a horse is immeasurable.”

The horses in the center are well loved and cared for. Vets are on hand to provide medical assistance, and the horses are regularly exercised, groomed, and even have their own solarium, all thanks to the hard work of the helpers and the charity behind the center.

“We don't have a capacity to take in many more horses at the moment. But we are training people to take care of their own horses and we are trying to teach people how to run centers like ours in other places,” Fedorova added.
