Sea Lion Trapping Under Way In Oregon
02-03-2010 Fox12 Oregon, USA
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Sea lion trapping has resumed on the Columbia River as fish and wildlife officials hope to protect the Chinook salmon run near Bonneville Dam.
2010 is the third year of a three-year sea lion killing plan approved by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said Oregon Department Fish & Wildlife spokeswoman Jessica Sall. Officials will reevaluate the situation at the end of the year to determine if they will ask for an extension.
The traps are already in place and the animals could be caught as early as this week.
Twenty-five sea lions have been killed during the first two years of the operation.
Captured sea lions must meet criteria before they can be killed. Sall said 80 targeted sea lions currently meet the euthanasia criteria.
