The Russian coast guard has detained a Cambodian-flagged vessel with 25 metric tons of live crab on board in the Sea of Okhotsk, a spokesman for the regional Coast Guard said on Friday.

The Positive, with a Russian crew on board, was detained off Sakhalin Island in Russia's Far East on Thursday afternoon as it was illegally crabbing in Russia's exclusive economic zone.

"Crabbing equipment and some 25 metric tons of live crab caught without permits were found on board," the spokesperson said.

Russia's Coast Guard is actively involved in tackling poachers in its territorial waters. Last year at least 20 ships, including many foreign vessels, were detained.
