Zwerfhonden in Bahrein krijgen nieuwe baasjes in de VS - Inwoner Karranah (Bahrein) is thuis voor ruim 230 honden, katten en vogels

Dogs found homes in US

29-12-2009 By REBECCA TORR, Gulf Daily News, Bahrain

ELEVEN homeless dogs from Bahrain have been adopted and fostered by families in the US thanks to the effort of a Bahrain volunteer. They were temporarily sheltered by Bahrain animal lover Tony Waters, who contacted a US rescue centre to find them homes.

STOLA, in San Francisco, California, has been rescuing and rehabilitating hounds, mainly in the US, for the past 10 years.

It has already extended its help to abandoned hounds in Qatar and Kuwait and was happy to support those in Bahrain.
"Four of the hounds were given to me when they were just six weeks old, they are nine months now," Mr Waters told the GDN.

"I also had a mama and her seven puppies that came to me when they were two months old. I sent 10 of my hounds and one from the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA), I still have two more to send.
"I really miss them, they are so good, they never bark, but I'm so happy for them, they have gone to good homes all over the US."

The 11 hounds were escorted by four volunteers on a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight funded by STOLA.
The other two hounds are waiting to be sent to STOLA, but Mr Waters needs to raise about BD600 for the trip.

The Cat Society of Bahrain and Pet Animals is backing the cause and is encouraging the public to donate funds for the dogs' travel expenses.

Mr Waters, known as the "dogfather", has rescued hundreds of animals over the past decade. He has more than 230 dogs, cats and birds that live with him in two villas he rents in Karranah.
His work is voluntary and he relies on food and other donations to help with their upkeep.

"I've got so many animals now that need homes, including a chicken that is recovering from a broken leg," said Mr Waters. "I also need volunteers and contributions of food."

Mr Waters holds an open day at his home every Friday, from 9am to 1pm, for those wishing to walk dogs, adopt an animal or donate food.
He is also a professional groomer and can provide grooming for all breeds.

To make a donation towards the dogs' airfare or upkeep, to attend an open day, or for grooming contact Mr Waters on 39629889.
People can also support Mr Waters' rescued animals by donating clothes and goods to Second Chance charity shop at Tibras on Budaiya Highway.

It is open on Tuesdays from 9.30am to noon and on Fridays from 4pm to 6pm and will soon be opening five days a week.
