Kenneth Frost, Sandusky County Park District Ranger, responded along with a Sandusky County sheriff’s deputy and a wildlife official on a report that a deer had fallen through the ice near Memory Marina.

After they located the deer and notice he was struggling to free itself from the ice, the Sandusky County Rescue Team was dispatched.
The team, consisting of Ballville Township firefighters, used their air boat to break a path to shore.

The deer was freed seven minutes after the rescue team’s arrival, Frost said. The animal was able to swim along the path and appeared to be mostly uninjured.

Ballville Township Fire Chief Doug Crowell said the rescue was good practice for an actual human rescue.
Crowell also said sometimes these rescues are important because it stops people from walking on the ice and trying to free the animals themselves, putting their lives in danger.

Frost said the total rescue time took an hour from the time of the report to when they were finished.
