Probe into animal deaths in Dehiwala Zoo

Sports and Public Recreation Minister Gamini Lokuge told Parliament yesterday that a special committee has been appointed to probe into the deaths of animals in the Dehiwala Zoological Garden. The Minister said around 200 animals had died from 2006 to 2008.

The Minister said the Government has imported 10, 18 and 17 animals respectively for 2006, 2007 and 2008, to the Zoo.

In addition 90, 86 and 98 animals respectively for 2006, 2007 and 2008 have bred within the Zoo. The Minister also said the annual revenue of the Zoo was Rs 136 million, Rs 204 million and Rs 194 million respectively for 2006, 2007 and 2008.
