Studenten Universiteit van Utah (VS) willen einde experimenten op honden en katten uit dierenasiels
Students Demand an End to the U's Deadly
Experiments on Animals From Shelters
07-12-2009 PETA, USA
Salt Lake City -- The University of Utah (the U) campus group Student Organization for Animal Rights (SOAR) has teamed up with peta2, PETA's youth division, to collect more than 1,000 signatures on a petition calling on the U to stop performing painful and deadly experiments on cats and dogs acquired from local animal shelters.
This year alone, the U has purchased more than 100 dogs and cats from shelters. The U's practice of buying and experimenting on animals from shelters was discovered during PETA's recent eight-month undercover investigation of the U's laboratories.
"The senseless maiming and killing of animals in experiments is unjustifiable under any circumstances, but when animals are used who had been entrusted to an animal shelter's care, it's even more hideous," says peta2's Ryan Huling. "Superior non-animal methods are available, and those are what the U should be using."
The following were among PETA's discoveries during the investigation:
* Dogs' necks were cut open and medical devices were implanted before the animals were killed.
* For $15, the U bought a cat named Robert from the Davis County animal shelter. Experimenters cut a hole in his skull and implanted electrodes in his brain.
* Kittens born to a pregnant cat purchased from the Davis County animal shelter died after chemicals were injected into their brains.
"The positive response to our petition was overwhelming," says SOAR spokesperson Amy Meyer. "The students have spoken with a clear voice, and they are demanding an end to the U's use of cats and dogs in experiments--immediately."
A copy of the petition is available upon request. For more information, please visit http://www.peta2.com/.
