Zoo’s web cameras catch special arrival for the first time ever as new polar bear cub enters the world
Aalborg Zoo has scored possibly a world first, with the birth of one of the zoo’s two new polar bear cubs being caught live on camera.
Female bear Malik gave birth to the first of her cubs in the outdoor enclosure at the North Jutland Zoo on Sunday morning, before carrying the newborn inside to her den. A couple of hours later she gave birth to the second cub, which was filmed by the den’s live feed web camera.
According to the zoo’s head zoologist, Per Christensen, it’s likely that this is the first time a polar bear birth has been captured on film.
‘Malik is looking after the young and it appears they’ve started nursing so for now, it looks very positive,’ zoo keeper Frank Thomsen said.
Nine-year-old Malik and the male bear named Felix are the proud parents to the two new cubs, which are the first for Malik.
The zoo already pioneered its live web feeds earlier this year when it followed the progress of young male cub Milak by installing cameras in the indoor polar bear enclosure. Hundreds of thousands followed his progress and it is expected the two new additions will be just as popular.
The video of the latest polar bear birth is available on the http://www.aalborgzoo.dk/ website.
