Dierenvrienden in Letland demonstreren bij parlement voor strengere straffen inzake dierenmishandeling


Lithuanians demonstrated their deprecation for

animal abuse

More than one hundred various local animal rights activists, ordinary citizens and some notable persons of society have gathered on Thursday near the Parliament of Lithuania to show their protest against animal abuse and express support for an amendment of Penal code which will enforce the maximum punishment for harsh treatment of animals up to four years of imprisonment and a fine of 26 thousand Litas (7 530 Euros or 11 360 USD).

According to the existing legal regulation, the maximum punishment for cruel treatment of animals in Lithuania is a prison sentence up to one year.

The amendment of Penal code was registered with effort of the news portal 15min.lt which was the first who informed about the cruel case of dog Pipiras (Pepper).

Last week, 16th November, a terrible video about Svajunas Beniukas appeared in Youtube and other similar pages. S.Beniukas tried to kill a dog, throwing down the bridge this poor animal. The dog survived only to die in animal care center in Kaunas passing one week after the incident from fatal injuries.

Later, 23th November, Kaunas district court sentenced S.Beniukas to stay in penitentiary house for 8 months and 10 days.Thursday afternoon the Parliament of Seimas will make a decision whether to approve the amendment on the first stage of presentation and open a way for the next stage of amendment adoption.
