Animal welfare experts are appealing for information after a dog was found starving in Fife.

The eight-year-old black, white and tan female collie crossbreed - pictured above - weighed less than half her normal body weight when she was discovered by a member of the public at around 5.15pm in a wooded area off Stark Road, Buckhaven, on Wednesday November 18.

She was handed in to the local police station and then taken to Langdykes Kennels where staff named her Lucy. She is now receiving one to one care in a temporary foster home.

Scottish SPCA Senior Inspector Steven Gray said, “Given the location and the circumstances Lucy was found in we are treating this as a possible abandonment.

"She was extremely thin and weighed only 6.7kg when she was found, less than half of the normal body weight of a female collie dog of her size, which is around 15-20kgs.

"Kennel staff became concerned for her health when she began vomiting and got progressively weaker. She was taken to a local vet for treatment and thankfully she is now stable and making a steady recovery.

"Lucy is a very loving and sweet natured little dog who doesn’t deserve to have been put through this terrible ordeal.
"We are very interested to hear from anyone who recognises the dog, or who spotted anyone in the area with a dog matching this description."

A Scottish SPCA spokeswoman added: "Abandoning an animal is a criminal offence that carries penalties of up to six months in prison, a £5,000 fine or both. Anyone found guilty of doing so can expect to be banned from keeping animals for a fixed period or life.

"Anyone with information relating to the dog should contact the Scottish SPCA Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999."
