SUMMERFIELD - Seventy-nine cocker spaniel-chihuahua mix-breed dogs were removed from a home near Ocala this week and were put down by Marion County Animal Services after they tested positive for canine parvo.

Eighty-seven dogs resided in an approximately 1,200 sq. foot doublewide mobile home and 79 were taken into custody by Marion County Animal Services. They were all put down when parvovirus was detected. (MARION COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES / November 25, 2009)

Before the animals could be removed Tuesday from the double-wide moble home on Southeast 147th Place in Summerfield, animal services workers had to call Marion County Fire Rescue's HazMat team because the ammonia level in the home was too high.

The animals' owner, Christine Watson, 54, surrendered the 79 dogs and told authorities she could no longer care for all of the animals and needed help. Animal services said the dogs were dirty, unkempt and none were vaccinated, spayed or neutered.

Animal workers cleaned and assesed the dogs into the night, but they soon discovered the dogs were infected with the highly contagious parvovirus disease.

"The Animal Center staff members are deeply saddened," Wendy Hillyard, Marion County Animal Center Manager, said in a statement. "After the care they put into these dogs overnight and the great hopes they had for adoption, it's hard to learn that the dogs are unadoptable due to disease."
