Dallas Animal Services seized nearly 100 dogs Thursday from a woman who manages a miniature pinscher rescue group. Authorities found out about the dogs when a neighbor complained that the animals were living in deplorable conditions.
When investigators began looking into the allegation at the property in the 3000 block of Canton Street in Deep Ellum, they grew suspicious that the dogs were being confined in their own waste.
According to a search warrant, when an investigator visited the property in October, he could smell the dogs from outside.
The investigator spoke with the property's owner, Karen Collins, and asked to tour the property, but she denied access.
Collins, who runs a rescue operation called Lone Star Min Pin Rescue, declined to comment Thursday. According to a Web site, the group aims to get rescued dogs into permanent homes.
"Their only wish is to know the love of human touch and give unconditional love in return," the site on http://www.petfinder.com/ states.
The dogs will be housed at the Dallas Animal Shelter until a municipal court hearing determines where to place the animals.
It's unclear whether Collins will face criminal charges, but none had been filed Wednesday.
