03-11-2009 Kashmir Observer, India
Srinagar, Nov 03, KONS: In the first such incident in the past twenty years of armed insurgency, a highly wanted Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander and his associate were killed in an attack by wild animals in Kulgam forests.
A highly wanted Hizb divisional commander, Muhammad Amin Malik, alias Qaisar and his associate, Bashir Ahmad Jarar, alias Saifullah, both from different parts of Reasi, were found dead in badly a mauled condition near a militant hideout in the Kulgam forests on Sunday, the police said. The bodies were found when a routine joint patrol of the police, the SOG and the army fanned out for searches in the forests after hearing gunfire, the senior superintendent of police for Kulgam, Kesav Ram Chaurasia, told the KNS.
An autopsy conducted after the bodies were retrieved by the police at around 11:30 on Monday indicated that the wounds found on them had been inflicted by bears who had mauled the duo.
According to the police officer, 2 AK 56 rifles, 1000 rounds of ammunition, magazines, and mortar grenades had been found near the bodies. The police has registered a case under section 7/25, and informed the next-of-kin of the militants, but no one had yet come forward to claim the bodies.
Chaurasia said that the militants were quite active in the Pir Pantsal belt. He said that Qaisar was active since 1990. The KNS, however, said that conflicting reports about the deaths of the militants were being received at the local level. Further details were awaited.
