Another horse found slaughtered

MIAMI - The remains of a slaughtered horse were found by a roadside in Homestead Saturday, marking the 21st reported incident in South Florida this year in what is apparently a flourishing illegal trade in horsemeat for human consumption.

"It was a typical slaughter," said Richard Couto, an investigator with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, who inspected the carcass discovered at SW 207th Ave and 195th Street in Miami-Dade County.

Couto said the young mare was apparently butchered in another location."This was done by pros," said Couto. Miami-Dade police have recently arrested four men in connection with two earlier horse slaughter cases. But Couto cautioned that the number of horse thefts is rising and a black market for horse meat is growing. "There are so many people doing this," he said. "It is profitable and there is a high demand, and the problem is not going away soon."

Couto said he had no information linking the latest case to any reported horse theft.

While a majority of recent cases of horse theft and slaughter have been reported in Miami-Dade County, horses in Broward County have also been killed this year.

Last month Miami-Dade County Commissioner Javier Souto sponsored a resolution urging state lawmakers to increase the criminal penalty for horse slaughter and to suspend or revoke the licenses of restaurants, stores or businesses that illegally sell horse meat.
