Het gaat goed met het met uitsterven bedreigde Australische kleine buideldiertje Gilberts potoroo
Endangered potoroo on track for survival
11-11-2009 ABC, Australia
A south west conservation group is hoping an expanded breeding program will help ensure the long-term survival of the gilberts potoroo.
The critically endangered marsupials were thought to be extinct until a small population was found on the south coast at Two People's Bay in 1994.
A breeding program on Bald Island has increased their numbers and some of the animals will soon be transported to Norman's Beach, near Albany.
Ron Dorn from the Gilberts Potoroo Action Group, says a rapid increase in population is expected once the potoroos settle in and planning for a third translocation site is underway.
"If the habitats become saturated with animals to the point where there are too many for that habitat then it does affect the rate at which reproduction takes place," he said.
"So we've got to try to stay below those maximum levels of habitation."
