Animal activists want Edmonton elephant’s

medical records, may not sue city

Animal rights activists are giving the City of Edmonton a month to provide proof that Lucy the elephant is too sick to be moved to a warm, California sanctuary.

Zoocheck Canada and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals say they will delay filing a lawsuit against the city over Lucy’s health until Dec. 14.

The old, ailing elephant has been at the centre of dispute between the city, which wants to keep Lucy at its zoo, and activists who say it is cruel to keep her there.

Last week the city announced that Lucy is getting a treatment program to improve her breathing capacity, lose weight and deal with her arthritis.
The activists have asked the city to send them documents and details of medical exams that prove the elephant is too ill to be moved.

They say if they agree with the findings they will not file the lawsuit, but they also say they doubt they will be satisfied.
